Childrens Self-esteem
Regularly displaying family photos in the home can help children feel a sense of belonging, importance, and security, which can boost their confidence.
(I do not photograph babies older that 6 months unless you have been to see me for a Maternity or Newborn photo session.)
Childrens self-esteem
The science behind Childrens self-esteem and the ‘WHY’ you should have a family gallery wall in your home.
The Murfreesboro Study was a 1975 study that examined the impact of photography on children’s self-esteem. The study was conducted by Tulane University on a group of fourth graders in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The study’s findings included:
- Study groups
The study had two groups of children: a control group and an experimental group. The control group did not participate in any activities other than the study, while the experimental group was given Polaroid cameras and assigned tasks. - Tasks
The experimental group was given tasks to photograph themselves in various poses, compositions, and emotions. They were also tasked with creating scrapbooks with their prints once a week. - Results
The study found that the experimental group’s self-esteem scores increased by 37% after the five-week period. - Implications
The study suggests that regularly displaying family photos in the home can help children feel a sense of belonging, importance, and security, which can boost their confidence.
I personally have photos displayed in my living room, of my daughter since she was a baby.
When she was younger she would talk about them and the memory behind the image. One of my favourites is a small canvas of her running into the sea in Menorca.
Every family outing we have photos of us as a family.
Now she she takes it for granted if I am working on a new project that I will need to test shoot her.See one of my treasured possessions. A portrait with my daughter. I am so glad I did it.
